All cruise lines are upping the entertainment and lounge/bar choices aboard their ships. It’s all part of a loosening of the regimentation that was often a cruise criticism years back. But on a ship-by-ship, tonnage-for-tonnage comparison, perhaps no cruise line beats NCL – the creators of their “Freestyle Cruising” – in entertainment and “thirst quenching” variety.

In addition to eight restaurants, this 82,000-ton ship offers a remarkable nine bars and lounges, plus a few multi-media conference and presentation rooms that can quickly convert to entertainment venues. Each lounge carries a creative, distinctive theme that plays off a region of the United States. If you’re hesitant to spend the night on the town aboard the Pride of America, just think of the American History lesson you’d be missing!

The two-level Hollywood Theater (“Oscars” and all) is where the Pride of America presents her extravagant, big-budget, Broadway and Las Vegas-style production numbers that NCL is justly proud of. The Mardi Gras Cabaret Loungeis just a bit more intimate and features soloists, magic acts and similar performances. It also does double duty as the Disco and on some nights it’s often where the Karaoke fun begins.

Waikiki’s Royal Hawaiian Hotel, known to generations of locals and regulars as the “Pink Palace,” inspired the name and décor of Pink’s Champagne & Cigar Bar. Come in off the beach, shake the sand off your feet and settle into one of the big wicker chairs for a glass of champagne or a Mai-tai. “Pink’s” accommodates 104 guests but the atmosphere is charming and intimate. Just off the lounge is a separate section called the Cigar Lounge.

The Napa Wine Bar offers a full bar but specializes in offering domestic wines by the glass. Its proximity to several of the Pride of America’s restaurants makes it a great spot to gather before dinner. The Gold Rush Pub offers drinks, darts and bar billiards. It’s also a popular spot for Karaoke.

Casino Note: Law prohibits casino gaming aboard the Pride of America. Although this ship has gambling facilities, the casino is closed except during certain international cruise segments.

For coffee lovers, there’s the John Adams Coffee Bar. Although there’s a popular beer named after the second U.S. President, we’re sure he enjoyed a good cup of coffee, too! This nook also offers delicious pastries. Outside overlooking the South Beach Pool, there’s the super-casual (flip-flops welcomed) Key West Bar & Grill offering a full bar and a tasty grill, too. High up on Deck 13 is the Waikiki Bar – your place to be for evening sunsets!

In addition, there’s the convenience of the Atrium Bar just off the Capitol Atrium – a great place to people watch at almost any hour of the day – and the Ocean Drive Bar just steps from the South Beach Pool – a great place to people watch at almost any hour of the day!
